Balancing everything all at once when moving in to a new place can be hectic, so below we have created a check list of things you may have not considered:
Setting Up Utilities (Water, Gas, Electricity, Wi-Fi etc.)
Unsure how to set up your utilities or which providers to go with or how to read your meter, then check out this great article by Split the Bills: https://www.splitthebills.co.uk/advice-centre/student-bills-basics/student-bills-where-to-start-and-what-you-need-to-do/.
Setting Up TV License
When you move in and want to start watching live tv, you will need to make sure you have a TV license and yes, this still applies to you as a student living in halls too. For more information, check the official TV Licensing website: https://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/check-if-you-need-one/for-your-home/students-aud1.
Council Tax
If you are a full-time student you don’t need to pay Council Tax and can request an exemption letter from the Student Query Form on the Hub. To request the letter use the following query types as seen in the below screenshot:
For more information and to see if you are eligible for council tax exemption, please use the following link - https://www.gov.uk/council-tax/discounts-for-full-time-students
Inventory
When you move in, request a copy of the inventory from the agent or landlord. This will be a list of the items such as furniture or appliances which have been provided by the landlord along with a report of what condition they are in. Upon receiving the inventory list, do a thorough check yourself to see that the condition of the inventory has been reported correctly and if you find something in poor condition which has not been reported make sure you flag this to either the landlord or agent in writing so that when you move out your deposit is returned. of what condition each of the appliances/ items etc. Once, you leave the property this report will be reviewed.
